St Louis, Missouri

Coming out of Springfield yesterday, we stuck closely to the old, well marked, Route 66.  Stopping in the town of Mt Olive, we visited a couple of landmarks:  Mother Jones Memorial and the Soulsby Shell Station.  See the pictures below (click on them to view in full size).  Mother Jones was a union activist for the miners and her story is one worth researching.  Do it!

We rolled into St Louis, MO yesterday around 3:00pm and checked in to the Hilton Downtown - about two blocks from the Gateway Arch.  We had dinner with Charlie and Muffy at a local brew pub - outstanding!  Great company and great conversation.  Charlie and Muffy live here and know the spots--they picked a good one.

This morning we woke up to a glorious, sunny Easter Sunday.  After breakfast we walked down to that icon of the midwest known as the Arch - over 600 feet high it dominates the skyline here.  We purchased tickets to see the Lewis and Clark Imax movie, the one hour riverboat ride on the Mississippi and finally the tram ride up to the top of the arch.  It was a good day.

We leave St Louis tomorrow morning.  Off on Rt 66 again.  Our adventure continues, come along for the ride!

  2. We are following you! The irony is that we are in cold, rainy California looking at your Hot journey on Route 66. Don't forget the Cadilac Ranch near Amarillo.
