Miami, Oklahoma

Tonight we are in Miami, Oklahoma.  Drove down from Springfield, MO and had some wonderful experiences along the way.  We are now about 620 miles into Route 66, The Mother Road.  We have been through three of the eight states the road traverses (IL, MO and KS) and with an estimated total length of 2,250 miles, we still have a long way to go.

Ran into an older fellow who now owns a Rt 66 icon known as Gay Purita's Sinclair station in Paris Springs Junction in Missouri.  He spent over an hour with us showing us everything on the property.  He is passionate about Rt 66.  Here he is with us at the station (click on pic's to enlarge):

His name is Gary Turner and if you ever do Rt 66 you owe it to yourself to visit with him.  He gave us the Rt 66 banner in this picture.  We plan to follow his suggestion and take a picture with it at every state line.  When we rolled into Kansas, we took this shot:

Galena is an old lead mining town in Kansas - and there is not a lot there today.  Route 66 traverses the NE corner of Kansas for only about 15 miles or so.  We completed that section rather quickly and found ourselves in Oklahoma.  We actually saw quite a few neat things today, including a Civil War site in Carthage, a small community called Red Oak and some very interesting buildings and bridges.  I have a lot of pictures, but it is getting late.  Until tomorrow, . . . . .
