Oklahoma and Rt 66

Woke up in Miami, Oklahoma this morning and it was 41 degrees outside - and windy!  It should be getting warmer over the next few days.

We got onto US 44, which parallels Rt66 and headed southwest towards Tulsa.  Turns out, US 44 is a toll road out of Miami so we paid the toll and kept on rolling.  Made good time, but not on Rt 66.  Looking at the maps we elected to get off the super highway and explore Chandler, a nice town on Rt 66.  There is a museum there and we spent some time in it:

We ran into a local on the crossing right in front of the museum.  A local artist, his name was Phil and he had a few helpful hints on some of the sites down the road.  Phil was quite a character and I thought his face would make for a good photo.  He agreed to let me snap a couple off:

From Chandler on to Arcadia we stuck with Rt 66.  Again, there are all kinds of sites to see on the Mother Road and one would need a month just to do one state if he stopped at every one.  The Round Barn in Arcadia is hard to avoid.  It kind of pops right out of the side of the road.  Originally built in 1898 by W.T. Oder, the barn is 43 feet high and 60 feet in diameter.  The roof of the barn collapsed 1988 and was rebuilt in 1992.  It features a nice gift shop on the first floor and a wide open space on the second.  Here are a few pictures:

We stopped at a place called "Pop's" that features soda pop - I mean every soda pop you can think of.  They serve up a good burger, too.  We had a hearty meal and drove on.  Note that all the bottles in the coolers and shelved in the windows are different kinds of pop - all flavors from all over:

I am starting to realize that there is no way I can do justice to a day on Rt 66 in a short blog.  I average 200 pictures a day and obviously can't post all of them.  Hope these few give you a feel for our day.

We rolled into Clinton, Oklahoma around 6pm this evening.  The Mother Road took us through Tulsa and Oklahoma City with a few stops along the way.   There is an excellent Route 66 Museum here in Clinton and we plan to spend some quality time there tomorrow.
